Before building your shortwave radio receiver, you need a complete set of items. You need magnetic wires. To get these, you have to go to an electronic store. Getting a magnetic wire is very important when you are building your radio receiver.

You need:

  • a glue stick
  • one germanium diode
  • one board to mount your radio on
  • wire stripping pliers
  • electrical tape
  • a telephone cord
  • a set of alligator leads

Steps On How To Build a Shortwave Reciever 

Here are the steps on how to build a shortwave receiver: 

Fold Your Magnetic Wire

Take out your magnetic wire and fold it to cover the glue stick or any entire cylindrical or round object you choose to use. You need to make sure the wire is tightly tied around the object. To achieve this, leave a portion of the wire to be evident. 

Leave about six inches. After you're done with that, use your tape and tie the wire to the cylindrical or circular object. With another tape, mount the coil to the board.  

Use the wire stripping pliers, and remove the ends of the wire you left evident in step one. That is quite an easy process because the ends of the wire are very thin. 

Fix The Wires

From the right side of the coil down to the diode, fix one end of the wire. Use tape to secure this connection afterward, so it doesn’t fall off. Cut the phone's cord and spread the wires inside by two inches. While doing that, also make sure you tie the end of wires to the end of the diode.

In doing this, you need to be extremely patient because the wires are very thin and could be easily fractured. Use tape to secure this connection firmly. 

Make an Antenna

The next step is to build an antenna. To do this, get your alligator clip and clip the remaining lead wires to the magnetic wires. It should be at the end of the wire. Leave the wire on the roll. Remove any piece or enamel wires stuck on the glue stick.

Testing Your Radio Reciever 

Fix the cord of the telephone to its headset. The alligator wire you connected to the left side of your coil has to be placed on good ground. You need to find a good spot for it. You can use a pipe running into the ground. It serves as a perfect fit for it. 

Unroll the wire of the antenna and place it in a high space to hang freely. 

Checking For Frequency Sound

To hear a signal or frequency sound, you need to touch the alligator clip at the top of the coil. If you still can not hear any sound, do not be discouraged yet. All you need to do is loosen a screw of the faceplate of a light switch near your door.

Let it be loose enough to hold firmly your alligator clip. You don't have to remove the faceplate. If you get a weak signal, the problem might be from your antenna.
